So I thought it would be a good idea to create this website so its easier to discuss ideas and methods. What we have from last week's meeting is the following:
Theme for the group: evaluating the effect of different surface area of coffee in all the experiments
BIOLOGY: Francisca Costa and Teresa Alves
Experiment: effect of coffee on enzyme catalse which is found in potatos --> catalase breaks down H2O2 into H2O + O2 therefore use a gas pressure sensor to measure volume of O2 released
CHEMISTRY: Pinky
Experiment: do a titration of diluted coffee with NaOH using methyl orange indicator. When indicator changes colour, record volume an repeat it several times to find out concentration of acids in coffee
Physics: Teresa Alves and Pinky
Experiment: coffee as an insulator --> but coffee (beans + powder in a coffee) in a beaker and then put a smaller beaker of hot water (at a certain temperature) in the larger beaker. Using a teperature probe, measure the temperature which will form a colling curve. See the difference between colling curve --> could be applied to real life: packaging
Environmental Systems and Societies: Tiago Nina and António Valente
Experiment: effect of caffeine on growth of mung beans
How would you measure the growth?
What would you control
We have handed in our apparatus list so we should probably write our controlled, uncontrolled, dependent and independent variable, our method and maybe the risk assessment. If we could all post it over here and we could then discuss it and show it to the teachers in Monday before starting the project on Tuesday. What do you think?
